Re-imagining a sustainable future for adult education: Learning to create a better world
Within the multiple global crises that we see and hear about daily, adult education in England is also in crisis. We face continuing cuts to funding and participation and little explicit government support, no matter the party in power. We also face a mixed picture of oversight with some provision devolved to SAs and some not but with plans for future devolution. Devolution has brought much closer oversight and the politicisation of the adult (skills) education budget, which now seeks a return on investment towards regional, mostly economic priorities.
Crises are a symptom of systems not working and in need of change. So, where can we go from here? The symposium is offered as a space to come together to discuss and share our thoughts and views on how we can support a sustainable future for our sector. We want to create a space for hope and new imaginings. As well as your inputs, we will hear from students, teachers, researchers and international educators who can give us an insight into global perspectives (Nordics and USA). The day will have space for five-minute provocations and longer presentations. Please let us know if that is something you would be interested in.

In the spirit of continuing these conversations about a hopeful future, we have the opportunity to stay overnight at Fircroft College on the 3rd July and participate in further conversations on the 4th July.
