This second series of events sought to develop and broaden our focus to examine and counter the current crises and hollowing out of representative and participatory democracy.

Welcome and Background to The Centenary Commission Research Circles

In this introductory presentation, Iain Jones provides a background context to the Research Circle events (2020-2022). These were borne out of the Centenary Commissions report on adult education and a recommendation for fostering community, democracy and dialogue.


Build Back Fairer

Keynote presentation from Professor Sir Michael G. Marmot, FRCP, Director of the University College London, Institute of Health Equity. This keynote was chaired by Professor Marjorie Mayo, Emeritus Professor in Community Development at Goldsmiths, University of London.


The role of cultural, community and natural assets in addressing societal and structural health inequalities in the UK

Following a Q&A session that took place after the keynote, Helen Chatterjee’s presentation focused on addressing societal and structural health inequalities within the UK. Helen is a Professor of Biology at University College London Biosciences and UCL Arts and Sciences.


Paulo Freire’s Political-Pedagogical Approach to Education: Questioning Inequalities Through Dialogue

The final presentation from Dr Ana Cruz focused on Freire’s approach to education and questioning inequalities through critical dialogue. Ana is a Professor of Education at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, who won the 2022 Paulo Freire Democratic Project Award of Social Justice and chaired the 3rd International Conference Paulo Freire: The Global Legacy.
